The Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, has adjourned further hearing in the ongoing criminal trial of Nnamdi Kanu to 28 and 29 May 2025, with additional hearing dates scheduled for June.
The proceedings are before James Omotosho. At the most recent sitting, a prosecution witness testified under examination on the legal status of regional security outfits, stating that the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun, operates pursuant to laws enacted by State Houses of Assembly in the South-West. The witness distinguished this from the Eastern Security Network, which the prosecution associates with the defendant.
Earlier in the session, lead defence counsel, Paul Erokoro, SAN, informed the court that the defence had experienced delays in filing certain video materials, explaining that portions considered unrelated to the proceedings were being edited out prior to presentation.
In managing the conduct of the trial, Justice Omotosho issued case-management directions limiting the prosecution to six days to conclude the presentation of all its witnesses, regardless of number. The court further directed that the defence would be allotted nine days to present its case, and stated that the timelines were to be strictly observed.
Following these directions, the court adjourned the matter to 28 and 29 May 2025, with further proceedings to continue in June.
What Next:
– Trial to resume on 28 and 29 May 2025.
– Prosecution to continue calling witnesses within the six-day limit ordered by the court.
– Defence case to proceed thereafter within the nine-day timeline set by the court.
