A Divisional Police Officer, CSP Baba Ali Mohammed, has died after sustaining severe injuries during a mob attack on the Rano Divisional Police Station in Kano State. The incident, reported by Daily Nigerian on May 27, 2025, unfolded after a suspect arrested for reckless riding died in custody, igniting outrage among local youths.
What Happened:
The suspect, Abdullahi Musa, a motorcycle mechanic, was reportedly arrested around 8:15 p.m. on May 25, 2025. Detained for reckless riding while allegedly under the influence, he fell ill in custody and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he died the following morning.
In retaliation, angry youths descended on the police station, setting parts of the building ablaze, destroying two vehicles, and damaging at least ten others. CSP Baba Ali Mohammed, who was injured during the chaos, later died while receiving treatment at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
“This deadly clash once again underscores the volatile consequences of deteriorating police-community relations and the high human cost of mob justice in Nigeria’s underserved rural areas.”
The Kano State Police Command confirmed the arrest of 27 suspects connected to the attack. Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Bakori has since visited the scene, condoled with the Emir of Rano, and vowed a thorough investigation into the matter.
What’s Next?
The Kano State Police Command has promised a transparent investigation, with additional arrests likely in the coming days. Authorities may file charges ranging from arson and destruction of public property to culpable homicide and assault.
Community leaders and civil society organizations are expected to increase pressure on both the police and government to address systemic issues contributing to these violent episodes and prevent future occurrences.
